Today, 160 guests attended Jewish Care’s 105th Business Breakfast sponsored by GoldenTree Asset Management, raising over £40,000. This will help to support Jewish Care’s vital services which are a lifeline to the Jewish community, touching the lives of 12,000 people each week.
Guest speaker, Steven Tananbaum, Founder, Managing Partner and Chief Investment Officer of GoldenTree Asset Management was in conversation with James Harding, journalist and author, Editor-in-Chief of The Observer and Founder of Tortoise Media.
Simon Lyons, Chair of the Business Group Committee, welcomed guests to the breakfast held at Claridges, saying, “We are honoured to be joined by Steve in conversation with James Harding. It is especially valuable to hear from Steve at a moment when investing has never felt more complex and when geopolitics makes every decision an exercise in balancing uncertainty and risk.
“We want to say a huge thank you to Steven and to the whole GoldenTree Asset Management team for your partnership and support.
“Jewish Care is a beacon for our community, particularly in times like these. For its clients, it’s an organisation that offers dignity, care, community and a sense of belonging in an environment that reflects their Jewish values. It allows us all to show who we are and what we stand for, caring for those who need us most, often at the most difficult moments of their lives.”
A veteran of the credit market with nearly 40 years of investing experience, guest speaker, Steven Tananbaum founded GoldenTree Asset Management in 2000. He was instrumental in building the firm into an organisation that is highly regarded for its investment process and partnership culture. Prior to forming GoldenTree, Mr. Tananbaum spent over a decade at MacKay Shields.
In a lively conversation, James Harding and Steven Tananbaum discussed the keys to the success and growth of GoldenTree which started from scratch in 2000 growing to a firm with $70bn in assets and more than 320 employees. They also talked about the role of the portfolio and the risks and opportunities of private credit as an asset class which the CIO said is ‘highly-differentiated’ also commenting on the ramifications of AI, on which Steven commented, ‘there will be winners and losers, the market is still deciding.”
Steven Tananbaum serves as Co-Chair of the Palm Beach Center to Combat Antisemitism & Hatred. He said, “Unfortunately antisemitism has been on the rise. For us it was about how to set about prioritising giving back to the Jewish community with public education covering what we feel is important and presented in a way that we feel is accurate, as well as supporting the community to feel safe.
On philanthropy, Steven Tananbaum said, “To me, philanthropy should be joyous and there are many great causes so there’s not one way to do it. You should do what you feel is satisfying and what helps to make the world a better place.”
After the breakfast, Ellisa Estrin, Jewish Care’s Director of Fundraising & Marketing, said, “We are so grateful to Steven Tananbaum for sharing his thoughtful insights with us today and to GoldenTree Asset Management for sponsoring the event. I’d also like to thank James Harding and all our guests for their generous support as well as the Business Group Committee for their continued hard work and dedication in supporting Jewish Care.”
“This year, we need to raise £20 million to ensure we can continue to deliver our vital services and the £40,000 raised today will help us to reach our goal. These services span across the life stages – from supporting young people aged 11 and over who are struggling with their mental health, through to caring for older people with increasingly complex needs. This includes supporting our aging Jewish community to live independently for as long as possible, alongside providing specialist dementia care, mental health support, and end-of-life care.”
