More than 220 people joined Jewish Care for a Business Breakfast at The Savoy Hotel, raising over £74,000 for our core services.
During the breakfast, donors heard Bill Browder, CEO Hermitage Capital Management, Head of the Global Magnitsky Justice Campaign and Author of Red Notice, which he discussed in detail.
Bill Browder was the largest foreign investor in Russia until 2005, when he was denied
entry to the country and declared “a threat to national security” for exposing corruption in
Russian state-owned companies. In 2008, Mr. Browder’s lawyer, Sergei Magnitsky, uncovered a massive fraud committed by Russian government officials that involved the theft of US $230 million of state taxes. Sergei testified against state officials involved in this fraud and was subsequently arrested, imprisoned without trial and systematically tortured. He spent a year in prison under horrific detention conditions, was repeatedly denied medical treatment, and died in prison on November 16, 2009, leaving behind a wife and two children.
Since then, Mr. Browder has sought justice outside of Russia and started a global campaign
for governments around the world to impose targeted visa bans and asset freezes on human
rights abusers and highly corrupt officials.
Jewish Care is grateful to Tamares Real Estate for sponsoring the event.
Keynote speaker, Bill Browder said:
“It was a pleasure to support Jewish Care at their Business Breakfast this morning. Their work across the community supporting elderly and vulnerable people is outstanding and is vital for those who need their support.”
Lord Howard Leigh, Chairman of Jewish Care’s Business Breakfast Committee said:
“We are so grateful to all supporters at our 98th Business Breakfast, for their continued generosity and to Tamares Real Estate for sponsoring the event. Thank you to Bill Browder for such an interesting and detailed account of what had happened to him.”
Adam Overlander-Kaye, Director of Fundraising and Community Engagement, Jewish Care said:
“We are hugely appreciative of the donations received today which will go towards our core services. The impact of world events on the cost of living was highlighted this morning and Jewish Care is no exception. We continue to need the vital support of our community during these difficult times to keep our services running, and our community centres and care homes warm.”
