Virtual volunteer
Our Meals on Wheels service delivers delicious and nutritious frozen hot kosher meals to older people living in their own homes. Volunteering to drive for Meals on Wheels is a great way to make a huge impact in a short amount of time. By delivering meals, you help to bring nutritious kosher food and a friendly visit to older people in your community. Volunteering usually takes place in the mornings and delivery routes can we worked around the areas that you know or live. You can volunteer to deliver meals once a week, once a month, with a friend, or on your own.

Our Befriending volunteers are integral to providing some of our clients with a friendly regular conversation, and importantly, help relieve loneliness and isolation. Befriending can be in person or over the phone and is a lovely and rewarding role who enjoy building meaningful one to one relationships. Volunteers are matched with clients with similar interests and backgrounds to help build enjoyable rewarding bonds between client and befriender. We have 3 sites: Golders Green, Frien Barnet, Redbridge

Driving members from their homes to our day centres or services is a great and fulfilling way to help people access activities and services that they may not be able to enjoy otherwise. You can volunteer to drive someone either one way or both. As well as helping people top get to where they need to be, it is a nice opportunity to build relationships and for them to enjoy a friendly chat during the journey. Journeys can be chosen to suit you and can be in an area where you know or live.

A lovely service that we are proud to offer is weekly Challah deliveries weekly to some of our members and clients and, at certain times of the year, gift packages. As well as arriving at the door with a fresh Challah to enjoy for shabbat, you are also offering a friendly doorstep visit to members of your community which is always so very well received. Routes can be chosen to suit you and can be in area that you know or live.

Activity Volunteers are instrumental in helping us run all sorts of activities for our members, clients, and residents. Types of activities that we offer can range from anything from reading and discussion groups, to art activities, to exercise classes, and support groups. You could volunteer for something that you have skills or interest in, or something that just suits your availability or location. Activity volunteers can take the lead in the activity as a facilitator, or provide hands-on assistance in a support role.

Butterfly volunteers are regular and committed volunteers who are proactive and ‘float’ within their chosen resource to help with whatever is needed on the day. This could include welcoming members, helping to serve refreshments, supporting a discussion group and chatting to members. Butterfly volunteering is a really nice way to make a difference and no shift is necessarily the same.

Telephone volunteering can take a number of different forms. This could be Telephone befriending lonely and isolated people over the phone, making calls on behalf of various departments, to speaking to Meals on Wheels clients to confirm their orders. Volunteering on the telephone can either be done from home, from our offices, or from resources and centres, depending on the demands of the role itself. Many of these roles are recruited as required, some are regular roles where as others are short term.

Virtual volunteering is assisting in virtual sessions and activities, usually from the comfort of your own home. The responsibilities of the role can vary from opening up and starting Zoom meetings, to hosting or assisting in discussion groups, to volunteering to do audio readings or books, poetry, or news media.
