The Lord Levy

Lord Michael Levy has been involved with Jewish Care since its inception and prior to that he was a trustee of the Jewish Welfare Board. He was instrumental in bringing the Jewish Welfare Board and Jewish Blind Society together to form Jewish Care in 1990. He became Chair of Jewish Care in 1992. His commitment has been instrumental in establishing the charity to serve the needs of the Jewish community. Lord Levy has continued to play a pivotal role leading the amalgamation of a number of Jewish charities to form Jewish Care.

A highly successful fundraiser all his life, and has been described as the “Number 1 Fundraiser in the UK”.  Lord Levy has appealed to the generosity of the community to raise the funds needed to build the care homes, community centres and infrastructure of the charity over many years. Lord Levy became President of Jewish Care in 2000. The Board of Trustees and Directorate look to his leadership and dedication to ensure that the organisation continues to adapt to the changing needs of the older Jewish community that we support.

Lord Levy was elevated to the role of Life President of Jewish Care in September 2020.

In 1997, Lord Levy became a life peer. He is Honorary President of UJIA and President of Sense and Sense International, Jewish Lads and Girls Brigade (JLGB), Jewish Free School (JFS), Etz Chaim Jewish Primary School, Mathilda Marks-Kennedy Jewish Primary School and Barnet & Southgate College. Lord Levy was the Chairman of the Academy Sponsor Trust, and was instrumental in creating the Academies Programme in Education from the very beginning on behalf of the Former Prime Minister, Sir Tony Blair.

Lord Levy was the Special Envoy for former Prime Minister, Sir Tony Blair, and his advisor on the Middle East.

Steven Lewis

Steven was first introduced to the organisation by his friend, the late Adam Science, who encouraged him to become involved with communal interests. He attended his first community meeting with Adam and left the meeting as Chairman of the Jewish Blind Society Pentland Business Lunch.

In 1990, Jewish Care was formed from the Jewish Blind Society and Jewish Welfare Board. Six months later, he was asked to Chair Young Jewish Care (YJC) and took his place on the Board of Trustees. As Chair of YJC, Steven established and shaped a successful programme of events and initiatives for young Jewish people. He continues to be passionate about engaging young people with the work of Jewish Care and is dedicated to introducing the organisation to many generous donors.

He has chaired the Patrons’ Committee for many years and is also a member of Jewish Care’s Topland Business Lunch Committee. In 2011, he took on the role of Chairman for nine years. Steven continues to be at the heart of the organisation and has been President of Jewish Care since September 2020.

Dame Gail Ronson DBE

Dame Gail has been involved with the Jewish Welfare Board and Jewish Care since 1983. Her support and dedication have been instrumental in making Jewish Care the successful and vital organisation that it is today. She ran many major fundraising dinners, the first of which celebrated the 125th anniversary of the Jewish Board of Guardians with Prince Charles and Princess Diana as special guests.

As Trustee of Jewish Care for many years, Dame Gail has chaired the Campaign Dinner Committee and was Deputy President. In 2010, Dame Gail became an Honorary President.

Always ready to do all she can to support the charity, Dame Gail has played a key role in important changes and new developments of our care campuses over the years. With Dame Gail’s continued support and commitment as well as that of The Gerald and Gail Ronson Family Foundation, Jewish Care has been able to ensure that we provide the very best in standards of care to the Jewish community.

Dame Gail received her DBE in the 2004 New Year’s Honours List for services to charitable causes. She is President of the RNIB and an Honorary Trustee of the Royal Opera House.

Jonathan Zenios

Jonathan Zenios has held the role of Honorary President since 2025, after an impressive tenure as Chair of the Board of Trustees from September 2020 to 2025. He first re-joined the Board in February 2020 as Chair Elect and had previously served as Treasurer between 2009 and 2016. Jonathan continues to be a Trustee of the Jewish Leadership Council, where he brings his extensive experience in both the charity sector and the broader Jewish community.

Jonathan has a wealth of expertise in business, having co-founded Confidante Cloud Services, a wealth tech startup, and currently serves as an Executive Coach at Z Coaching. He has an extensive background in investment banking and finance, having held senior roles such as Chairman of Enso Financial Analytics, a fintech firm sold to ICAP, and Founder and Partner of Z Investment Management, a boutique investment management firm. He spent over a decade at Barclays Capital, where he was a Global Head of Structured Capital Markets and a member of the Global Partnership Committee. Prior to that, Jonathan worked at Bear Stearns and BZW and started his career at Arthur Andersen.

In addition to his business career, Jonathan has made significant contributions to the voluntary sector, serving on the boards of several organizations, including The Design Museum (Chair of Finance & Operations Committee), Jewish Leadership Council, and Jewish Care, where he has served as both Trustee and Chair. His voluntary experience extends to Rosetrees Trust, North London Hospice, and Highgate United Synagogue, among others.

Jonathan’s professional qualifications include being a Chartered Accountant (FCA) and a Chartered Tax Adviser (CTA), as well as completing a Meyler Campbell “Mastered” in Executive Coaching. He recently completed an MPhil in Early Modern History at St John’s College, Cambridge, where he had previously studied History as an undergraduate. His academic achievements are complemented by a passion for art, design, history, philosophy, and a wide range of other interests.

Stephen Zimmerman joined the Board of Trustees in 2001 and was responsible for overseeing Jewish Care’s governance review in 2004. He served as Chairman of Jewish Care from 2006 to 2011, after which he became an Honorary President.

Highly respected, Stephen led Jewish Care to flourish over the years that he was Chairman with his knowledge and understanding of the organisation, the challenges in the social care sector and the changing demographic of the Jewish community.

Stephen is also a member of our Business Breakfast Committee. Jewish Care continues to benefit hugely from his support and passion for the work we do, and the impact we have on people’s lives.

With over 25 years’ experience in the non-profit sector, Debbie was a Trustee and Vice Chair of Jewish Care, Trustee of mental health charity Jami, and has served as a trustee of the JLC from 2014, as well as Vice Chair from 2019 -2024.

Debbie is also Chair of Lead, a division of the JLC;  a Vice President of the JLC; a Trustee of The Rosetrees Trust, which supports medical research; and a non-executive board member of Industrial Dwelling Society, a London-based housing association. She also holds the role of Executive Lead for Behind Every Kick, a registered charity promoting social mobility and enhancing employment prospects for young Londoners.

Debbie trained and qualified as a solicitor at Herbert Smith Freehills, and then spent over a decade as a Senior Lecturer and later a Visiting Lecturer at the University of Law.

Nicola Loftus

Nicola Loftus has a distinguished background in journalism, having written for publications such as The Sunday Times, The Telegraph, The Independent, The Daily Mail, and The Jewish Chronicle, as well as a wide range of magazines. She also worked as an editor at Conde Nast’s New Business Magazines, shaping content across various industries.

As Trustee of Jewish Care for many years, Nicola has chaired the organisation’s annual fundraising dinner for 10 years, playing a key role in its success. In recognition of her long-standing commitment, she was appointed Senior Vice President, where she continues to support our development. Her passion for philanthropy and community extends beyond Jewish Care, she was a Trustee of the Anna Freud National Centre for Children and Families and now sits on the board of Rothschild Foundation Hanadiv Europe.

As a journalist, fundraiser, facilitator, and connector, Nicola is always ready to do all she can to support Jewish Care through important changes and new developments to ensure that we provide the very best in standards of care to the Jewish community.

Marcus joined Jewish Care’s board of Trustees in November 2021.

Marcus currently runs his own investment and advisory business, NorthCroft Capital. He acts as a non-executive Director and advisor to a number of  investment managers, pension funds and property companies. His previous roles include spending 17 years at BlackRock where he was Global head of real estate and where he served on their Global Operating committee, Global Human Capital committee and European Executive committee. Marcus is a Fellow of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors.

Marcus is married with two children and has been actively involved in a number of Jewish charities.

Arnold Wagner OBE

Arnold Wagner OBE joined Jewish Care’s Board of Trustees in 2012 and is Chair of the Human Resources Expert Group.

In addition to his involvement with Jewish Care, Arnold chairs the Pension Protection Fund (PPF), a position he has held since 2016, having joined the PPF Board in 2011. He is also the Senior Independent Director at Cifas, who are leaders in fraud prevention.

In his full-time professional career, Arnold was Director of Human Resources at Smiths Group plc and previously held a similar role at Bunzl plc. He has also served as a non-executive director at Renew Holdings plc and at the UK Atomic Energy Authority where he chaired the Remuneration Committee.

Arnold has been active in the Jewish Education sector and was Chair of Governors at JFS between 1993 and 2003. He was awarded an OBE in 2002 for his services to education.

Arnold is married to Sandra. They have four children and four grandchildren.

Gayle joined Jewish Care’s Board of Trustees in November 2016 and is the chair of the Friends of Jewish Care Major Donor programme.

Gayle sits on the Campaign Oversight Group, Redbridge Redevelopment Group, Community Services and the Interior Design Oversight Group.

In 2008 Gayle established The Local Angels Committee, of which she continues to Chair, raising money for Jewish Care services in Redbridge.

In 2014 Gayle was nominated by Jewish Care and took part in the senior Jewish leadership programme ‘Gamechangers’ which explores and prepares lay leaders for leadership roles within communal organisations.

Outside of her commitments to Jewish Care Gayle is an active member of The Essex Jewish Community Council and chairs The Property Group for SWESRS Synagogue in Newbury Park.

Michael Brodtman

Michael joined Jewish Care’s Board of Trustees in 2013. He is a Trustee of the Joel Emmanuel Trust and has chaired the Property Expert Group since 2008 , a committee of lay property professionals which advises the charity on all matters relating to its portfolio of care homes and community centres.

Michael is an Executive Director and UK Board member of CBRE, the largest worldwide firm of real estate advisors. Michael is on the Global Valuation Board of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and has been a member of the Policy Committee of the British Property Federation and the Bank of England Commercial Property Forum. He is a Non-Executive Director of Places for People, a housing association and placemaking group which owns and manages some 200,000 homes throughout the UK.

Michael lives in London with wife Naomi and four children. Michael’s family is actively involved with a number of other Jewish community care charities.

Adam Dawson

Adam joined Jewish Care’s Board of Trustees in November 2018 having been a volunteer and fundraiser for Jewish Care over many years.

Adam has been active in a number of Jewish communal organisations including Chair of the Union of Jewish Students and the National Chaplaincy Board; Executive member of the Board of Deputies and Founder and Chair of Governors of Etz Chaim Jewish Primary

Adam is a practising Barrister at 9 Gough Square and a Director of a small boutique law firm, Dawson Crowther. He specialises in Personal Injury and Clinical Negligence cases.

Adam lives in Mill Hill with his wife Debbie and his daughter and two sons.

Harold Gittelmon

Harold joined Jewish Care’s Board of Trustees in November 2018 having previously chaired a strategic review for Jewish Care into the medium-term future of fundraising for the organisation.

Harold also holds not for profit roles with Grief Encounter, Mencap, Camp Simcha and UJIA and also Chairs a variety of businesses including Albany Investments, Neptune Rum and Themove.com.

His previous roles include being CEO Europe for Flemingo, a global duty-free business, and Managing Director of Harding Retail a niche concessionaire operating retail outlets on cruise ships. Prior to those roles Harold enjoyed a career in the Banking and Private Equity industries.

Harold is married with two daughters and holds an MBA from Cass Business School.

Leah Hurst

Leah became a trustee for Jewish Care in 2020 having spent five years on the Independent Living Committee (formerly  JET) the last 2 as chair.

Leah is Head of Legal and Business Affairs at the Royal Opera House. After 15 years working as a  commercial property lawyer, 10 years ago she made the move to work in the voluntary sector. Legal roles at The British Council, Save the Children and The Old Vic followed before she took up her current job.

She has a geography degree from Oxford, a law degree from Cambridge and an MBA from London Business School. She lives in Golders Green, is married with 2 children and is an active member at Belsize Square Synagogue.

Jonathan Rose

Jonathan joined Jewish Care’s board of trustees in 2021. He has been a member of the property expert group for the last five years which advises the charity on property matters.

Jonathan is the Group Managing Director of the Pears Group for the past 13 years. Previously he was Property Director at Asda Property Holdings.

Jonathan is also Deputy Chairman for Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospice. He lives in London with his wife and three children.

Amy Woolf

Amy Woolf joins us as a Trustee in addition to continuing to serve as a committee member on our Residential Care Committee.

Amy is the founder and Director of The Woolf Partnership, a firm focused on Technology, Transformation and Change. Prior to launching The Woolf Partnership, Amy spent many years working within the professional services world, at KPMG. During her tenure she provided a bespoke direct search service to the partner group, worked alongside the UK Board to launch a firmwide social collaboration network, created sustainable inclusion practices and most recently was responsible for the design and content of the highly successful C-Suite Leadership Programme.

A proud advocate for inclusion, Amy has been a member of women’s networks throughout her working life and was instrumental in the development of the City Mental Health Alliance.

Amy has volunteered with Jewish Care since 2011. She has participated in Employee Volunteering schemes and took part in the pilot Lay Leadership Development programme. She has spent time with the Holocaust Survivors’ Centre Consultative Committee and now sits on the Residential Care Committee. In 2015 she launched and now Chairs the Jewish Care Families Programme.

Stephanie Cooper

Stephanie joined Jewish Care’s Board of Trustees in May 2022, having been a member of the Audit and Risk and Quality Assurance Committees of Jewish Care for a number of years.

After qualifying as a solicitor at a large London practice, she subsequently worked in private practice and as a law lecturer, a member of the Parole Board and as a tribunal judge.

Stephanie has a wide experience of voluntary activities, including having been a Non-Executive Director of an NHS Trust, a Governor of an NHS Trust, and a Chair of Governors of a large secondary school. She is currently the Vice Chair of an NHS Research and Ethics Committee, an English Heritage volunteer at Kenwood House, and is a trustee of Langdon, where she chairs the Clinical Governance Committee.

Stephanie holds an LLM in criminology and an MA in Medical Law and Medical Ethics.

Darren Braham

Darren Braham joined Jewish Care’s board of Trustees in 2023 having previously been on the Finance Committee since 2021. He is currently an angel investor and non-executive director with a number of fast-growing technology based businesses, where he works with the management teams in the strategic and operational development of the companies.

Darren acquired experience in scaling up businesses as the Co-founder, and until 2018, the Chief Financial Officer of First Utility, the first significant challenger to the Big 6 energy retailers in the UK and prior to that as a director of First Telecom, a challenger operator to the incumbent European telcos.

Darren qualified as a Chartered Accountant in1990.

He is married with three children and lives in North London.

Dr Charles Daniels

Dr Charles Daniels MBChB, BSc (Hons), MSc, MRCGP is Medical Director and Head of Quality at St Luke’s Kenton Grange Hospice as well as Macmillan Consultant in Palliative Medicine for hospital and community services at London Northwest Healthcare NHS Trust (LNWUHT).

He is passionate about finding the best ways to support staff to improve the patient and carer experience and hopes to bring these skills and experience to his work in Jewish Care. Dr Daniels has been involved with Jewish Care for several years. He supported us during the Covid-19 pandemic, with clinical care and training for staff and relatives. Chair of the Clinical Governance Committee, Dr Daniels has been a member of the Committee for two years.

Charles has a wonderful and supportive wife Miriam and three special sons.

Dr Abigail Swerdlow

Dr Abigail Swerdlow MRCPsych is a Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist at the Royal Free Hospital, and clinical lead of the Royal Free CAMHS Neurodevelopmental service. Dr Swerdlow trained at the Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust.

She has previously held roles as a Fellow in Medical Education, an Honorary Lecturer, and has completed a Leadership and Management fellowship at the Royal College of Psychiatrists. The recipient of a Rising Star Award in Healthcare, Dr Swerdlow has been involved with the UK Jewish Medical Association for 15 years and is the Chair of Jewish Care’s Clinical Quality and Innovations Committee.

Dr Swerdlow’s expertise is invaluable in our response to the increasing need for mental health services for those from the age of 11 upwards in the community who are living with mental illness and distress.

She has been involved with Jami since 2019, as both a Trustee and the Chair of Jami’s Clinical Quality and Innovation Committee.
Abigail lives in London with her husband, Olie, and three children.

Daniel Carmel-Brown

Daniel was appointed to the role of CEO in April 2018 and has worked for the organisation for over 25 years.

Having started on the front line of the organisation as a care assistant at Redbridge Jewish Community Centre, Daniel held a variety of roles there before going on to manage the centre. He has also had the opportunity to lead the team at the Brenner Centre at Stepney Jewish Community Centre, at Raine House and is a qualified informal and community educator.

Prior to his role as CEO, Daniel was the Director of Fundraising and Marketing where he held responsibility for the organisation’s voluntary revenue income, capital projects fundraising, legacy income and marketing, the Jewish Care ‘brand’ and reputation management.

Daniel is married with 3 children and enjoys a bit of exercise (he ran the London Marathon for Jewish Care in 2017). He is a Trustee of a number of other charities in both the Jewish and wider community.

Director of Fundraising & Marketing

Ellisa Estrin

Ellisa was appointed into the role of Director of Fundraising & Marketing in November 2023, having previously been the Director of Marketing, Communications and Customer Engagement since August 2018.

Ellisa joined Jewish Care in 2008 having held roles in various London advertising agencies where she was responsible for delivering marketing campaigns for clients including; NSPCC, Department of Health, LA Fitness, Waitrose, Privilege Insurance and Vodafone.

Ellisa’s career began at Jewish Care in a Fundraising & Marketing role at Redbridge Jewish Community Centre (a place she volunteered at from the age of 15–18 years old). Over the last decade she has held several roles of increasing responsibility including overseeing the marketing of Jewish Care’s services, brand development, and for four years was the Assistant Director of Marketing.

Ellisa is married to Craig, has two children, Zach and Sadie, enjoys regular forest walks in her home town of Epping. She is a Trustee of Essex & Herts Air Ambulance and a Trustee for BNJC in Brighton & Hove. She is a former Chair and Trustee of the charity Jewish Legacy Giving.

Director of Legal Affairs, Property and Procurement

Jonathan West

Jonathan joined Jewish Care in 2017 as General Counsel and is a qualified solicitor and member of the Law Society in England and Wales.

Prior to joining Jewish Care, Jonathan worked at several law firms in the City, Canary Wharf and Covent Garden, specialising in family related litigation.

He is responsible for overseeing and identifying the legal issues in all areas of Jewish Care’s work and their interrelation across the organisation, as well as corporate governance and policy issues. Jonathan works closely with each of the other officers, and their teams, to ensure that they are appropriately aware of relevant issues and advised accordingly. The role is both reactive and proactive – addressing issues reactively by analysing and providing the legal perspective – and proactively by seeking to mitigate potential legal problems.

In 2018 Jonathan also assumed the role of Company Secretary – taking responsibility for Jewish Care’s statutory records and registers and filing requirements at Companies House as well as organising and minuting Trustee meetings.

More recently Jonathan took over responsibility for Procurement, Business Continuity, Insurance and Security (2019) and Property (2021).

Jonathan is married to Lisa, has two daughters and a son. He is vice-chair of Governors at Kantor King Solomon High School and a Governor of Wohl Ilford Jewish Primary School. In his spare time he enjoys the frustrations of supporting a North London football team.

Chief Financial Officer

Amanda King

Amanda joined Jewish Care in April 2021 as Director of Finance and IT.

Amanda is a qualified accountant with 20 years of operational financial experience at companies including Disney, Cable and Wireless, Centrica, and as the CFO of a tech start-up. She is a Treasurer and Trustee of the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust and Secretary of her local church PCC (Parochial Church Council).

Amanda is married with two teenage boys and a Golden Retriever.

Director of Community Services, Volunteering, Social Work & Hospitality

Richard Shone

Richard began working for Jewish Care in 1990, the very year Jewish Care was formed, although he was a volunteer in the organisation for several years before that in the Youth Section at what was known then as Sinclair House, which we now know today as Redbridge JCC.

He has fulfilled a number of roles during those 30 years with the organisation. In 2013 Richard took on the role of Service Manager for Community Services and from 2018 until July 2020, he was the Head of Community Engagement and Volunteering. In July of last year Richard was asked to take on the role of Interim Deputy Director of Community Services and Volunteering to oversee the resetting of our Community Services.

Director of Community Mental Health Services (Jami)

Louise Kermode

Louise became Director of Community Mental Health Services (Jami) following Jami’s integration into Jewish Care in April 2024.

As a qualified occupational therapist and recipient of the London School of Occupational Therapy Prize, Louise has demonstrated a strong commitment throughout her career to developing innovative ways to support people with mental illness and distress. With an interest in research, she has had several articles published in health and social care journals and regularly presents at industry conferences.

She began her career at Jami in 2012 as an occupational therapist and in her first year became the charity’s mental health recovery champion. Later, she became part of the introduction and development of peer support at Jami, which she says has been a highlight of her career.

As the organisation grew, so did her role. Towards the end of 2019, Louise became Head of Services. She was excited to join Jewish Care, bringing with her a wealth of experience and very much working through her occupational therapy lens, models and frameworks.

Louise is married with one son and is something of a coffee connoisseur.

Commercial Director

Rob Train

Rob joined Jewish Care in January 2023 as Head of Commercial Finance and was appointed as Commercial Director in October 2024. He has worked closely with Care Services to enhance financial sustainability through our care home efficiency project, making significant savings by reducing our use of agency staff, this has also increased continuity of care for those we support in our care homes.

A chartered accountant with 18 years of experience, prior to joining Jewish Care, Rob worked in the commercial sector with companies including Burberry, Itsu and Hotel Chocolat.

Rob lives in Hertfordshire with his wife and two young children.

Rita Rousso

Rita will be the Director of Care Services from 1st December 2024.

Rita brings a wealth of global experience having spent two decades as registered nurse and senior executive within the health and social care sector across the UK, Ireland, Australia, and Israel. Rita’s experiences include working at Jewish Care Victoria in Melbourne, Australia, as a Quality and Compliance Manager and Acting General Manager where she was responsible for the clinical and quality management of care homes, disability day care centres and specialist disability support services.

Having grown up in the Jewish community in Australia, Rita is looking forward to enhancing the wellbeing of the Jewish community and to support the vital work to improve the lives of those we support. She is look forward to collaborating with a dedicated team, building positive relationships, and contributing to a culture that upholds compassion, inclusion, and excellence.
